Solvay Group Security

After creation in July 2016, the Solvay Group Security team has built a threat-based enterprise security risk management program to support Solvay’s business. With exception of IT security, the team built the necessary structures, policies, protocols and tools to allow Solvay to : identify and analyse the security threats towards its employees, sites, information and reputation; assess the resulting security risks on a priority basis and implement baseline security measures to mitigate these security risks.  Applying the Enterprise Security Risk Management philosophy as a guidance to ensure a holistic approach, driven by business needs, the team has succeeded in lifting Solvay’s security position and embedding security risk management in the company.

R&T is an independent security consultancy, established in 2007 by 2 engineers, Paul Robrechts & Marc Thienpont, both with more than 2 decades of experience. They offer strategic security solutions for critical environments with measurable impact on company’s core processes. Their strategy is based on high quality, flexibility, personal engagement, transparency and understanding customers’ needs. The judging panel felt their independence, skill and enthusiasm for Security Risk Management hits the mark, coupled with their vast amount of experience and knowledge.

Outstanding Customer Service Initiative
Belgium Railway Customer Service Initiative – SNCB

Within the SNCB, the Corporate Security Service (CSS) is responsible for increasing both objective and subjective safety in stations and on trains for travellers, staff and partners. CSS organises large scale internal and external joint partner initiatives where Securail, local and federal police, De Lijn and TEC (bus companies), ticket and control teams and station staff are involved to desist crime and to provide confidence in safety across Belgium Railway.  Judges felt that the initiative was excellent and demonstrated the importance of interdisciplinary cooperation whilst demonstrating good operational organisation.

Outstanding Police/Law Enforcement Initiative
PZ Leuven & UZ Leuven Partnership Initiative

On a daily basis 40000 people are on site at the health science campus of the university hospital Leuven.  A collaboration has been formed between UZ Leuven and the local police department to create a safe and secure environment for the site. This unique partnership between the local police of Leuven and UZ Leuven demonstrates the importance of collaboration and is a great example of the way the COP philosophy can be implemented commented a member of the judging panel.

Outstanding New security Product

VAMS HI Secure application has been developed for high footfall and Critical Infrastructure(CI) locations using the latest technologies – Palm/Iris Recognition, QR code, and High Availability – addressing security challenges of visitors and the premise.  VAMS not only enhances the visitor experience by reducing check-in times but also helps customers to comply with various audit compliances.  A simple yet sophisticated application; the judges applauded their customer-oriented thinking.

Outstanding Information Security Company

NVISO is exclusively focused on cyber security services and has extensive expertise in security-critical industries such as financial services, government and defense and the technology sector. Their services are structured around the cyber security incident Prevent, Detect and Respond strategy.  The judges noted their merits in having internationally recognised expertise and having made good investments in R&D

Outstanding Young Security Professional
Dirk Pichel – FedEx Logistics

Dirk (37) has been active in the security industry since 2008.  He started at Samsung Electronics Europe Logistics as part of the European security organization and is now responsible for security at FedEx Logistics for EMEA and APAC.  He’s a member of various industry organizations including IFPO, ASIS International and TAPA.  He’s served on the board of ASIS International – Benelux chapter as the Young Professional liaison to further develop YP initiatives in the Benelux. Dirk is always looking for ways to combine “traditional” security practices with new technologies. Colleagues describe him as a (positive) disrupter within the security profession and someone not afraid of sharing his experience and knowledge.

Lifetime Achievement Award
Marc Thienpont – Robrechts & Thienpont

Has a career in security engineering of 37 years regarded as a pioneer and authority in complex security engineering and physical security consultancy.  Well respected and much appreciated by customers, authorities and colleagues.

He was the founding partner and Managing Director of U-Soft between 1983-2004 and since 2007 has been the founding partner and president of Robrechts and Thienpont.

During his career he has never stopped learning, continuously focused on new trends and technical innovations, always improving his knowledge in physical security, risk and business continuity management, counter-terrorism and organisational measures.  

Marc has remarkable milestones which confirm his outstanding performance and the substantial impact he has had on the security sector:

  • Development of simulation tool to determine aggression scenarios in buildings (1988)
  • Financial institutions: innovative design & specifications of an alarm network, interfacing alarm panels with network X25-protocol (products had to be developed) (1992); innovative situational security awareness training (1996-2000)
  • European institutions: design and technical specifications of counter-terrorism solutions (2000-present)
  • Critical infrastructure: complete redesign of a site (2009-present), of a new main entrance (2015-present)
  • European district: innovative security solutions (2016-present)

As a volunteer he promoted the security profession and was a great defender of an academic education in risk & security management which included:

  • ASIS International Benelux Chapter: founding-member (1983), more than a decade Board member, active as secretary, honorary Chapter member (2018).
  • Promotor, chairman, member of different consultative bodies/expert commissions:
    –   Food Security: Board member (since 2004)
    –   Institute for Security Advisors: President (2003-2006)
    –   ExCom member IFPO Europe (2004-2007)
    –   Catholic University Leuven: Academic Consultant (2002-2006); Chairman of the steering committee “academical training Security Management” (1999-2006)
